Obverse: the center of the obverse is illustrated with the Joanina chapel of the University of Coimbra – one of the oldest universities in Portugal. Also, each triangle in the illustration represents the roofs of the university. The words "Universidade de Coimbra 730 anos" that are written between the triangles means the university of Coimbra 730 years. The outer ring of the coin is illustrated with the 12 stars of the European flag.

About the coin: the coin was made to honor the 730 Anniversary of the University of Coimbra which was established in 1290 in Lisbon, Portugal. The university regardless of its age is still in continuous operation and it even is one of the country‘s largest museums.
