Obverse: the obverse features the coat of arms of the People's Republic of Bulgaria with a lion surrounded by wheat ears and a star. Below the emblem are the dates “681–1944”, while the inscriptions “People's Republic of Bulgaria”, “5 Leva”, and the year “1973” appear around the rim.
Reverse: the reverse depicts a portrait of Vasil Levski. The years “1837–1873”, marking his birth and death, are shown on either side of the portrait, while his name is inscribed below.
About the coin: this coin commemorates the 100th anniversary of the death of Vasil Levski, one of the most important figures in Bulgarian history and a leading revolutionary of the Bulgarian national liberation movement. It is part of the commemorative coinage of the People's Republic of Bulgaria.
