Obverse: The obverse shows the portrait of King Amadeo I facing left. Around is the legend AMADEO I REY DE ESPAÑA (Amadeo I, King of Spain). At the bottom are the engraver’s initials L· M· and the year of issue between stars. The design was created by Luis Marchionni y Hombrón.
Reverse: The reverse features the crowned coat of arms of Spain with the Pillars of Hercules. Around the legend LEY 900 MILESIMAS 40 PIEZAS EN KILOG· (Law 900 thousandths, 40 pieces in a kilogram), between the pillars the motto PLUS ULTRA (Further beyond). At the bottom – denomination 5 PESETAS and mint marks. Engraver – Luis Marchionni y Hombrón.
About the coin: The 5 pesetas silver coin was minted in 1871 during the reign of Amadeo I (1871–1873). Struck in .900 silver, it weighs 25 g, measures 37 mm in diameter and 2 mm in thickness. The edge bears the inscription JUSTICIA Y LIBERTAD (Justice and liberty). These coins circulated until the peseta’s demonetization in 1939 and are today regarded as rare collectibles reflecting the short reign of Amadeo I in Spain.
