Obverse: The obverse depicts the portrait of young King Alfonso XIII facing left. Around the portrait the inscription ALFONSO XIII POR LA G· DE DIOS (Alfonso XIII by the grace of God). At the bottom are the engraver’s initials B· M· and the year of issue between stars. The design was created by Bartolomé Maura Montaner.
Reverse: The reverse shows the crowned coat of arms of Spain with the Pillars of Hercules. Around is the inscription REY CONSTL. DE ESPAÑA (Constitutional King of Spain), between the pillars the motto PLUS ULTRA (Further beyond). At the bottom – denomination 5 PESETAS and mint marks. Engraver – Bartolomé Maura Montaner.
About the coin: The 5 pesetas silver coin was minted between 1895 and 1899 during the reign of Alfonso XIII when he was still a child. It is struck from .900 silver, weighs 25 g, has a diameter of 37 mm and a thickness of 2 mm. The edge bears three groups of nine fleur-de-lis. These coins circulated until the demonetization of the peseta and are now valued as collectibles representing Spanish history and heraldry of the late 19th century.
