Obverse: The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II (Canada follows a constitutional monarchy, under which Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was also the monarch of Canada). The words ELIZABETH II, D G REGINA are inscribed around her, with the denomination 5 DOLLARS at the bottom.
Reverse: The reverse depicts a traveler and a local person paddling a canoe. The traveler is paddling from the back of the canoe, while the local person is at the front. Between them is a bundled fur package with the HB mark, referencing the Hudson's Bay Company, and above them, stylized vertical rays represent the northern lights illuminating the sky. This emphasizes the respect for the fur trade – the industry that helped build the country.
About the coin: This first circulating Canadian silver coin was issued in 1935 to commemorate King George V's Silver Jubilee. The coin is minted from 0.999 fine silver and is one of the purest coins currently available.
