Obverse: the obverse of the coin depicts a shot put athlete during the throw. In the background appears a fragment of a stadium together with the logo of the Moscow Olympic Games. Around the edge is the inscription “Games of the XXII Olympiad Moscow 1980”, while the year “1979” is shown at the bottom.
Reverse: the reverse features the coat of arms of the USSR – a hammer and sickle over a globe, surrounded by wheat sheaves and topped with a five-pointed star. At the bottom is the denomination “5 rubles”, while the letters “CCCP” appear on the sides.

The coin is dedicated to the athletics discipline of shot put, considered one of the oldest and most technically demanding throwing events.
