About the coin: In 1997, at the age of 87, Mother Teresa died. The Vatican State Mint is dedicating its 2 euro coin to her life and work. The obverse of the coin reflects all the love, devotion and sacrifice that Mother Teresa gave to alleviate the suffering of "the poorest of the poor". Born in 1910 in Skopje, in what is now the Republic of North Macedonia, she was brought up according to the precepts of the Catholic Church. At a very young age, she became interested in missionary work in India and, after taking her vows, devoted her life to helping and protecting the neediest. The Congregation of the "Missionaries of Charity", which she founded, was recognised by Pope Pius XII in 1950.
