Obverse: minted based on photography, which became a national symbol of courage and dedication in Malta in 2021. The coin depicts two Maltese nurses preparing to fight an outbreak of COVID-19. The inscription “HEROES OF THE PANDEMIC” at the top elevates the work of medical staff during an epidemic.
Reverse: normal 2 euro denomination and images.
About the coin: the Central Bank of Malta introduced this coin in 2021 in honor of the country’s medical sector. During the ceremony, Professor Edward Scicluna presented this coin to Health Minister Chris Fearne as a symbolic gift to all those involved in the fight against the epidemic. The obverse nurses Doreen Zammit and Charmaine Cauchi reflect the difficulties they faced in the fight against COVID-19. The design of the coin was created by artist Maria Anna Frisone.
