About the coin: The discovery of the Antarctic continent is particularly important for Estonia, as the Baltic German sailor Benjamin von Bellingshausen (1778-1852), an officer in the Imperial Russian Navy, was born in Saaremaa. Bellingshausen was appointed commander of the southern polar expedition. In July 1819, he left the Russian naval base at Kronstadt on the Gulf of Finland. He was led by two ships, Vostok and Mirny. In December 1819 the southern Sandwich Islands were discovered. While traveling further south in January of 1820, Bellingshausen explored the Antarctic coast, but had not yet realized the extent of his discovery.
