Obverse: The obverse of the 1, 2 and 5-cent coins depicts various Greek warships (the Athens three-legged model, which is the largest warship; the earring, a type of ship used during the Greek War of Independence, a modern naval tanker reflecting the innovative spirit of Greek shipping). The 10, 20 and 50-cent coins depict prominent Greek states (Rigas Fereos, Capodistrias, Eleftherios Venizelos). The obverse of the € 1 coin depicts an owl whose image was copied from an ancient Athenian 4-drachma coin, in which Europe was kidnapped by Zeus, who was in the form of a bull.
