About the coin: this 2-euro coin is dedicated to Wartburg, which is a medieval castle. It stands on a 410 m high precipice south-west of the town of Eisenach in the German state of Thuringia and overlooks the south-west. In 1999, UNESCO inscribed Wartburg Castle on its World Heritage List. It was the home of Saint Elizabeth, the place where Martin Luther translated the New Testament of the Bible into German, the site of the Wartburg Festival of 1817, and, it is believed, the site of the legendary Battle of Sängerkrieg. It was an important source of inspiration for Ludwig II when he decided to build Neuschwanstein Castle. Wartburg is the most visited tourist attraction in Thuringia after Weimar. Although the castle today retains many of its original 12th- and 15th-century buildings, much of the interior dates back only to the 19th century.
